TOPIC: Getting sound to work ...

CD Audio
On modern macs, CD audio is passed digitally to the sound output. On older systems, this was done via an analog cable that connected from the CD drive to the sound card (or sound port on the motherboard). The solution is to use software called xmms-cdread. It reads CD data via the digital signal.

  1. Launch XMMS
    • K-Menu --> Multimedia --> XMMS
    • Place your mouse cursor over the XMMS application. Hold the CTRL key and press "P".
    • Select the Audio I/O Plugins tab.
  2. Input plugin
    • Select 'AudioCD Reader 0.11d' from the list.
    • Select the 'Enable Plugin' check box.
    • Select 'CD Audio Player 1.2.5' from the list.
    • De-select (disable) the 'Enable Plugin' check box.
    • Press "Apply" (do NOT press "Ok" yet).
  3. Output Plugin
    • Select 'OSS Driver 1.2.5' from the list.
    • Press "Apply" and then "Ok" at the bottom of the screen.

MP3 Audio
  1. Launch XMMS
    • K-Menu --> Multimedia --> XMMS
    • Place your mouse cursor over the XMMS application. Hold the CTRL key and press "P".
    • Select the Audio I/O Plugins tab.
  2. Input plugin
    • Select 'MPEG Layer 1/2/3 Player 1.2.5' from the list.
    • Select the 'Enable Plugin' check box.
    • Select 'Configure'.
    • Choose 8-bit (not 16-bit). Press 'Ok'.
    • Press "Apply" (do NOT press "Ok" yet).
  3. Output Plugin
    • Select 'aRTS Driver 0.4' from the list.
    • Press "Apply" and then "Ok" at the bottom of the screen.

KDE Sound
This is the mix between a kernel sound driver problem and how KDE's sound server handles the kernel sound driver. There are two solutions:
  1. Add the following line to /etc/rc.local:

    cat /dev/sndstat

    - or -

  2. Configure artsd for 8-bit sound rather then 16-bit sound. This can be done from the KDE Control Panel -> Sound -> Sound Server -> Sound I/O -> Sound Quality -> 8-bit.

System Beep
You can disable this from Konsole via Settings -> Bell -> None

Or, from a command line:

xset b off [ENTER]

... which will disable the beep throughout X.

- or -

Turn down mixer settings.
