Yellow Dog Linux 7 Support

TOPIC: Installing YDL 7

Introduction
This guide assumes you have successfully passed the boot screen and chosen your install method. If this is not the case, please see Bootscreen documentation.

Step 1 : Installation
Depending on your installation type, some of these steps may not be present.

  1. You may choose to test your installation media if you suspect it has been damaged or was not written correctly.
  2. Pass Welcome screen.
  3. Select preferred language for the operating system, and proceed.
  4. Select compatible keyboard type, and proceed.
  5. You may be presented with a screen asking to initialize your drive, erasing ALL DATA. If there is no data on your drive which you wish to keep, press Yes. Otherwise, press No and backup the data or use another drive before continuing.
  6. For a new basic install on a system where YDL will be the only operating system, select "remove all partitions on selected drives and create default layout".
    1. If this install is on a system with a Linux operating system you wish to replace, select "Remove Linux partitions on selected drives and create default layout".
    2. If this install is on a system with an operating system you wish to preserve, select "use free space on selected drives and create default layout".
    3. Following instructions available online, you may create a custom partition layout. {Advanced users ONLY}
  7. Select the drives (if you have multiple) on which to perform the above actions, and proceed.
  8. Confirm your changes are correct in the warning dialog.
  9. You may choose to review and modify the partition layout. {Advanced users ONLY}
  10. Select which of the detected networking devices on your system to use, and what settings each should use, and proceed next.
    • Text-based installation will prompt you whether or not to use an interface, and what settings to use for each interface present on your system.
    • Default settings are ok for most network configurations.
  11. Select your timezone manually from the combo box, or with your mouse over map, and proceed next.
    • Text-based installation will simply be a list of locales/cities. Choose the one closest to your location.
  12. Enter a password for the "root" superuser, and proceed next.
    • This is the highest level user and has all privileges. Password must be at least 6 chars long.
  13. Select the packages of software you wish to install.
    • Desktop:
    •     Provides the default set of tools and applications.
    • NVIDIA GPU Computing Environment 3.0 Beta:
    •     Provides the Nvidia Toolkit with OpenCL / CUDA profiler, and SDK 3.0 version of OpenCL and CUDA.
    • NVIDIA GPU Computing Environment 2.3 Beta:
    •     Provides the OpenCL profiler, and SDKs version 2.3 of OpenCL and CUDA.
    • NVIDIA GPU Computing Environment 2.3:
    •     Provides the Nvidia Toolkit with CUDA profiler, and SDK 2.3 version of CUDA.
    • NVIDIA GPU Computing Environment 2.2:
    •     Provides the Nvidia Toolkit, and SDK 2.2 version of CUDA.
    • Software Development:
    •     Provides the tools necessary to compile software from source on your computer.
    • Server:
    •     Provides additional software packages for hosting websites and other services.
  14. Proceed next for installation to begin.
  15. Click reboot when done installation.

Step 2 : Graphical First Boot

  1. Press forward to pass Welcome screen.
  2. Read and agree to the license agreement, and proceed forward.
  3. If you know what services you will need to allow through the system firewall choose them now, and proceed forward.
    • These settings can be changed later.
  4. Select your SELinux setting, and proceed forward.
    • SE Linux is not known to interfere with many typical tasks in YDL but if heightened security is not required, we suggest disabling it to prevent any possible issues in the future.
  5. Configure your X11 Driver Module.
  6. Configure your YDL.net Account.
  7. Ensure the date and time settings of your machine are correct, and proceed forward.
  8. Enter your user account information, and proceed forward.
    • The root password that you set earlier should be different from this password.
    • You will use this account for normal operation. Use root only in cases when absolutely necessary.
  9. Ensure your sound is operating correctly, testing with the play button and volume slider, and proceed forward.
    • If you cannot hear the sound with any settings, search online for a solution specific to your hardware.
  10. Insert any CDs you have with additional software to install, and click Install. If you have no CDs, click Finish.
  11. You have successfully installed your system. Login now with the user account information you just supplied in step 8 of this section, or as the "root" user.
